Country Overview

Encompassing roughly 1,800 square kilometers, the Comoros archipelago boasts an estimated population of 800,000 (2017). This translates to a high population density, with nearly 400 inhabitants per square kilometer, and over half of its population (53%) is under the age of 20.

Subsistence agriculture, primarily focused on vanilla, clove, and ylang-ylang exports, defines the Comoros' economy alongside import-related commerce and government services. However, the potential for fishing and tourism remains largely untapped, offering exciting possibilities for future development.

Current Projects

The Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development (ISFD) has played a key role in empowering Comoros' youth and strengthening the country's healthcare system. The Youth Entrepreneurship Support Project fosters financial inclusion and economic opportunities by providing microfinance resources for young entrepreneurs. In the health sector, the ISFD has conducted Cataract Treatment Campaigns under the Alliance for Avoidable Blindness (AFAB), restoring vision and improving the quality of life for many.

Furthermore, the ISFD's support for building the capacities of national laboratories strengthens Comoros' ability to diagnose and combat diseases.  Most recently, the ISFD collaborated with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Tadamon CSOs Accelerator program. This initiative provided essential supplies, facilitated risk communication and community engagement, and supported the protection of livelihoods and household assets – all crucial components of Comoros' response to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recovery efforts.
