Country Overview

Sierra Leone encompasses approximately 71,470 square kilometers with an estimated population of 7.4 million (2017 data). The population is predominantly Muslim (80%) and comprises diverse ethnicities such as the Temne, Mende, and Limba. Notably, a significant portion, around 60%, falls under the age of 25, with a high youth unemployment rate of 60%. The economy is largely agrarian, with subsistence agriculture employing roughly 65% of the working-age population and contributing 60% to the GDP. Sierra Leone boasts rich natural resources, exporting primarily diamonds, iron ore, rutile, and bauxite.

Current Projects

The Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development (ISFD) has played a multifaceted role in supporting Sierra Leone's development journey. ISFD contributions include funding for the GIETRENK project which empowers communities to manage their own development initiatives, the LLF - Rice Value Chain project to strengthen food security, the Palm Oil Production project to create economic opportunities, and support for both Sierra Leone Community-Driven Development Project and the Health System Strengthening Project.
