Country Overview

Niger, a vast West African nation encompassing approximately 1,267,000 square kilometers, boasts a population estimated at 19.3 million in 2016. Notably, 87.1% of the population falls under the age of 35, and women comprise 52.1%. Furthermore, 80% of the population resides in rural areas. Niger's economy, characterized by a 5% growth rate in 2016, is heavily reliant on primary sectors including agriculture (including livestock), mining (particularly uranium), and informal trade activities which contribute roughly 39% to the country’s GDP. Rich in natural resources such as gold, coal, oil, and uranium, and possessing a young population, Niger is poised for transformation. The nation aspires to build a new vision guided by policies that demonstrably aim to reduce poverty through comprehensive development initiatives.

Current Projects

ISFD's contributions to Niger are diverse and impactful. ISFD addressed food security through the LLF's Regional Rice Value Chain Development Project and improve agricultural practices with the Smallholders Agricultural Productivity Enhancement Program. The Regional Soil Fertility Mapping Program assists in informed land management. Beyond agriculture, ISFD supports infrastructure development through the electrification of 200 villages with solar energy.

Investing in people's potential, ISFD promotes education with the Vocational Literacy Program for Poverty Reduction and supports healthcare with programs like AFAB Program for eye health and initiatives to reduce maternal and child mortality.

ISFD even strengthens civil society with the Tadamon CSOs Accelerator program.
