Country Overview
Chad is a vast landlocked country in the Central African Sub-Region, covering an area of 1,284,000 square km. Home to approximately 12.2 million residents, of which 44% are young people under 14 and nearly 78% residing in rural areas. Despite its diverse and natural resources, including petroleum, uranium, gold, and fertile land, the country grapples with significant challenges. Poverty remains a pressing concern, with close to half the population living below the poverty line. Food insecurity further complicates the lives of many Chadians.
Regarding Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which ensures access to water for all, Chad faces challenges. While access to drinking water stands at approximately 61%, access to basic hygiene remains one of the lowest globally at around 18%.
Current Projects
The Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development (ISFD) has a multifaceted portfolio of initiatives in Chad. ISFD empowers communities through rural development and education initiatives like Sustainable Villages Project, SERVE for economic stability, and scholarships. Healthcare sees a boost with cataract campaigns, hospital upgrades, and medical scholarships. Poverty reduction and water scarcity are addressed through VOLIP and rural water infrastructure projects.
