Islamic Republic of Mauritania
Country Overview
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania joined the IsDB in August 1974 as a founder member. The first IsDB operation in Mauritania was approved in December 06, 1977. Mauritania is an LDMC country where close to 33 % of the population is still poor. Poverty remains a predominantly rural phenomenon.
Mauritania is a vast country bordering the Sahara Desert. It gained independence in 1960 and has a population of over 3.9 million, mostly concentrated in urban areas like the capital, Nouakchott. Despite its size, much of Mauritania's land is desert, with only the southern region receiving regular rainfall.
