Republic of Djibouti
Country Overview
Djibouti occupies a strategic location at the tip of the Horn of Africa. With a total area of 23,200 square kilometers, it borders Ethiopia to the west and south, Somalia to the southeast, Eritrea to the north, and the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden to the east.
The majority of population resides in Djibouti City, the capital. This urban center houses over two-thirds of the country's roughly 1 million people (2017 estimate). The landscape is dominated by a stony semi-desert with scattered plateaus and highlands. France granted Djibouti independence in 1977. French remains an official language, alongside Arabic, which is widely spoken.
